Agra is set for a make-over with a melay of projects in the pipeline which are designed to bring in more revenue and extend basic amenities at its world famous monuments. The infamous Taj Mahal may be Agra’s big attraction, but it’s not centre stage in the new development plans which focus on religious and cultural sites rather than historical monuments. Speaking to IANS, Agra’s Divisional Commissioner Amrit Abhijat said “‘an integrated plan to broad-base facilities and promote lesser known monuments and cultural sites” would be implemented in phases. Interest groups gathered in the city to prioritise Agra’s development plan, with traffic management topping the list of issues to address. A Heritage Walk will also be developed and officials have drawn up plans for developing Bateshwar, famous for its 101 Shiva temples in a row along the Yamuna bank. Authorities are also acting on complaint of cheating and over-billing by requiring handicraft shops to display prices and punishing restaurants who charge dual rates for locals and tourists.
