Air Canada’sflight attendants’ union, CUPE has told the airline that its 6,800 members willgo on strike on Wednesday.
If strikes are to go ahead, Air Canada said its internationalroutes would remain unaffected and it would run a ‘partial schedule’ on itsexpress services.
Last month the airline narrowly averted a strike whennegotiators reached a tentative agreement with the union just 24 hours prior tothe planned start of industrial action. CUPE has now said however, that the 20September agreement was not ratified by its members. The union is reported tobe seeking greater assurances over job security.
“We are perplexed anddisappointed that two tentative agreements negotiated in good faith with andunanimously recommended by the democratically elected representatives of ourflight attendants have failed to be ratified,” said Duncan Dee, executivevice president and chief operating officer. “Air Canada remains hopefulthat a disruption can be avoided”.
The carrier has introduced a flexiblerebooking option for clients set to travel over the next six days, on a rollingwindow basis (e.g. 10-15 October, 11-16 October).
