Air Canada’s flight attendants’ union has told the airline it plans to go on strike on Wednesday 21 September 2011. The Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE), which represents the airline’s 6,800 cabin crew, served the airline with the strike notice after new contract discussions broke down. The union’s members have been without a contract since 31 March, having rejected the previous deal offered by the airline through mediators.
The national carrier said that talks are ongoing and it remains hopeful that a deal can be struck. It added however, that in the event of a strike, it will implement a partial schedule including codeshare flights operated by its partner airlines.
Air Canada has also introduced a flexible rebooking policy to enables customers booked for travel over the next six days to change their booking free of charge. In the event of cancellations, full refunds would be available.
