Air India will launch a new direct service connecting New Delhi with San Francisco before the end of the year.
The plan was announced during Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s recent visit to Silicon Valley. Flights will commence on 2 December 2015 and will operate three times a week (Wednesdays, Fridays and Sundays) using a Boeing 777-200LR (long-range) aircraft.
The route will mark the first direct flights between the two cities and Air India’s fourth US route, following existing services to New York (JFK and Newark) and Chicago.
The announcement quashes speculation that Air India was planning to launch direct flights from Bengaluru to San Francisco, a route that would have connected two of the world’s biggest IT hubs and created the longest air route in the world.
