With over 20,000 customers booked to flyto the Pacific Islands and on trans-Tasman routes overthe long Easter weekend, the strike is coming at a bad time for the nationalcarrier. The staff planning the industrial action, who work for airlinesubsidiary, Zeal 320, claim they receive lower wages than their colleaguesworking for the main airline. They are demanding a salary increase that willmove them towards parity.
The strike represents anunfortunate breakdown in staff relations after a sustained period of calm, thelast attendants’ industrial action having been in 2005.
Air New Zealand will deploy non-unionstaff to cover their shortfall and airline Glen Sowry, General Manager of AirNZ’s subsidiary, Tasman Pacific Airlines, said it anticipated “little or noimpact on their passengers” and that they would not be looking to othercarriers to help bail them out.
