According to the latest IATA figures, carriers based in Europe saw a 2% increase in traffic year-on-year for the month and a 2.9% growth in capacity which pushed load factors to 79.4%.
In comparison to other regions the growth was on par with Asia Pacific carriers, while those in the Middle East continued to post the highest rises at 10.9% for April. Latin America and Africa-based airlines also performed better with increases of 4.7% and 4.6% respectively. Globally, traffic was up 3.2%.
“Passenger demand continued to grow in April, extending the positive trend that has been developing since late 2012.The increase, however, is concentrated in emerging markets. Airlines in Europe and North America reported a modest expansion compared to the strong growth seen in Africa, the Middle East and Asia,” said Tony Tyler, director general at IATA.
“While economic developments in Europe and the US certainly bear watching, most indicators continue to signal further expansion in air travel,” he added.
