AirAsia will be introducing fuel surcharges from Tuesday 3 May 2011, for all domestic and international routes. Having previously resisted the levy, since abolishing it in November 2008, the low-cost carrier has finally had to adjust to the new economic reality, which has seen jet fuel prices surge to more than US$140 per barrel.
Kathleen Tan, Regional Head of Commercial, AirAsia said; “The rising jet fuel prices… have made it imperative for us to reintroduce the fuel surcharge, despite our best efforts to resist it for as long as we could. We hope that this will only be a temporary measure, and AirAsia will continue to ensure our fares remain low despite the fuel surcharge, which is the lowest in the world.”
AirAsia’s strong ancillary sales, such as insurance, baggage fees, preferred seating hand in-flight merchandise sales, had previously enabled it to partially offset the price of rising fuel. The new surcharges will range from MYR10 (US$3.40) on domestic flights in Malaysia to MYR90 for long-haul AirAsia X services to London, Paris and Christchurch.
