AirAsia will begin charging passengers a check-in fee as the airline rolls out self check-in services across its network. The budget carrier will levy a fee of MYR10 (US$3) per guest on bookings made from 21 September onwards.
The move is intended to maximise ancillary revenues as the airline seeks to maintain low-ticket prices amid escalating operating costs. The charge will apply on all AirAsia flights and all AirAsia X flights except services departing Tokyo (Haneda) & Osaka (Kansai) in Japan, Seoul (Incheon) in Korea and Tehran (Iran).
New self service options allow passengers to check-in online and via mobile for AirAsia flights up to one hour before departure, and AirAsia X flights up to four hours before departure.
Checking in via the web requires guests to print out their own boarding passes and bring it with them to the airport. Mobile check-in users will be sent a 2D barcode upon confirmation and boarding passes could be printed by using barcode scanners at the airport. Guests can drop-off bags at designated counters where they must also verify travel documents. Travellers without any luggage can go directly to the document check counter and proceed directly to the departure gate.
