AirAisa has announced that tickets will soon go on sale for a charity flight featuring Virgin boss Sir Richard Branson as a flight attendant. The event came about following a wager between Branson and AirAsia’s Group CEO, Tony Fernandes, as to which of their Formula 1 teams would finish higher in the standings last season. When Fernandes’ Lotus team won, the Branson agreed to honour the bet, don an AirAsia X flight attendant’s uniform and serve aboard the Malaysian low-cost carrier’s London-Kuala Lumpur service.
Five months after the F1 season’s final race of 2010 in Abu Dhabi, the day of reckoning for Branson has finally arrived. On 1 May 2011, he will take to the skies wearing AirAsia’s red female flight attendant uniform, serving Fernandes and 250 other guests on the special 13-hour flight.
This opportunity to fly with the two airline bosses will be available for booking online at www.AirAsiaGo.com from today, 13 April, until 7am on 24 April 2011. A total of 160 tickets onboard this special flight are available for sale on AirAsiaGo.com. Tickets start from GBP4,500 (US$7,330).
Other guests on board the flight will include street magician, Dynamo, former F1 team boss and BBC pundit, Eddie Jordan, who will be performing with his four-piece band ‘Eddie & The Robbers’, and actor and comedian James Corden. All proceeds from the event will go to beneficiaries to be determined by Fernandes and Branson.
“We’ve come a full circle, Richard and I. Who would’ve thought my mentor will be serving as a flight attendant on AirAsia? I’ve got my razor ready, and I can’t wait to shave his hairy legs!” said Fernandes. “Jokes aside, how we got to this charity flight is a testament that we can achieve anything if we are fueled by passion, grit, determination and never take no for an answer. Team Lotus, a Malaysian F1 team, supported by AirAsia, an ASEAN airline has beaten the odds on the race track and on the air, and there will be more to come. I am also glad that we are able to contribute to those in need through this charity flight as well.”
