AirAsia experienced a strong increase in passenger traffic in the third quarter of the year.
The budget airline group carried 10.6 million passengers in the three months to 30 September 2013, 27% more than the same period last year.
This growth was driven by the addition of new aircraft; AirAsia has added 32 more aircraft in the past 12 months, taking its total fleet size to 137 aircraft. The group’s average load factor dipped two percentage points to 76%.
AirAsia’s Malaysian unit continued to carry the most passengers, with 5.3m people boarding the Kuala Lumpur-based airline’s flights in the quarter, 11% up year-on-year. Thai AirAsia’s traffic jumped 30% to 2.6m passengers, while Indonesia AirAsia saw a 36% increase, to 2.1m.
The new Manila-based subsidiary, Philippines AirAsia, saw a 525% surge in traffic, to 730,000 passengers, but AirAsia Japan ceased operating.
