AirAsia X made its long-awaited debut flight to London on Wednesday. Rather than sit back and bask in the glory of its landmark flight however, the airline’s CEO, Azran Osman Rani detailed the long-haul low-cost carrier’s further expansion plans, Bernama reported.
The carrier will initially operate five direct flights per week of the Kuala Lumpur-London Stansted sector, but Azran was reported saying that the airline plans to launch daily services from July. The long-haul low-cost carrier would facilitate the extra services by leasing another Airbus A340, while adding that the airline might also consider buying the next generation Airbus A350 for its long haul services.
“The A350 is still at the design stage, we will wait for it to be more at the advanced stage before deciding,” Bernama reported him saying on board the inaugural KL-London flight.
Azran said that AirAsia X also aims to expand into to Central and Eastern Europe.
“Countries like Russia and Poland are emerging markets, it will be interesting to tap into it,” he said, adding that, Germany and Italy could also be attractive destinations.
However, for now, AirAsia X will concentrate on London and add another route only next year, he said.
The airline intends to expand its destinations from five now to 11 by the end of this year, Bernama reported, with New Delhi, Chengdu and Dubai all possible targets.
