Malaysia’s long-haul, low cost carrier, AirAsia X, will launch a new route from Kuala Lumpur to Tianjin from 2 April, Bernama reported. The launch of services to Tianjin will represent the carrier’s second Chinese destination, following Hangzhou. Sister carrier AirAsia also runs services to Shenzhen, Haikou, Guangzhou, Hong Kong and Guilin
“This route is part of AirAsia’s strategic expansion plan in China and East Asia, in response to strong demands from Malaysia and the greater ASEAN population, as well as China,” said AirAsia X Chief Executive Officer, Azran Osman-Rani, was quoted saying, adding that the new route would further enhance business and economic ties between the region and China.
The news follows Rani saying last week that the airline intended lease up to five Airbus A340-300s so it can fly to new markets in Europe and New Zealand.
“For the right price, we would like to lease five A340-300s, although they are in tight supply,” Rani was quoted saying on the Dow Jones Newswires. “Depending on the availability of the aircraft, we want to move to new markets like Germany, France and New Zealand.”
AirAsia X will start flying to London on 11 March, and hopes to launch flights to Japan by year-end.
