AirAsia X said it is happy with its Gold Coast services and plans to add Perth to its network on 2 November, with services to Melbourne expected to start next year, The Australian reported. It said Chief Executive Azran Osman-Rani believed the airline would end up flying to five destinations in Australia.
The airline is currently operating to Australia and China with one leased plane, while it waits for its first two customised Airbus A330-300 aircraft to be delivered in October and December this year. The deliveries are part of an order for 25 A330s that will be configured with a nine-abreast economy configuration with a 31-inch seat pitch. According to the report, the airline is also leasing an Airbus A340-300 to start services between Kuala Lumpur and London, probably next year, and is already looking for a second plane.
According to Osman-Rani, the airline was not interested in expanding beyond a KL-London service unless oil prices dropped below $US100 a barrel.
