Airbus outsells Boeing in 2008

Airbus achievedthe victory by selling the somewhat ironic figure of 777 aircraft in 2008,beating Boeing’s 662 plane sales. Both manufacturers saw sharp declines insales. Airbus’ sales dropped 42% from 2007, while Boeing saw a year-on-yeardecline of 53%.
Airbus also outstripped Boeing in deliveries. The Europeangiant saw a 7% rise in deliveries to a record 483 planes. Boeing – hit by amachinists strike at its Seattlefactory – saw its deliveries fall by 15% to 375 planes.
Airbus’ plane sales for the year totalled US$100 billion,giving it a market share of 54%. It also has a backlog of 3,715 orders, whichit estimates will take six years to clear. Last year, Airbus sold a total of472 single-aisle aircraft and 310 wide-body models, including nine A380s.
