American Airlines plans to introduce “a la carte pricing”, where the airfare is broken into a basic fare with additional services for a fee.
Associated Press said there were likely to be a few basic fare plans, and travellers can pick additional services in what is called “unbundling” – giving travellers lower base fares with the option of paying for extras that they really want, from beverages to blankets. The report said some travellers were wary, suspecting the airlines were just trying to gain more revenue.
“We as an industry have opted to not just raise (ticket) prices but to raise prices and change the fee structure,” Daniel Garton, American Airlines’ Executive Vice President of Marketing, was quoted saying.
The report said United Airlines expected to raise US$700 million a year from fees, and that Northwest Airlines estimated baggage charges would bring in US$150 million to US$200 million a year. Continental Airlines predicted it would generate more than US$100 million just from a new US$15 fee for checking a single bag.
