American Airlines has placed an order for 460 new aircraft with Airbus and Boeing. The order, will replace and expand the carrier’s narrow-body fleet over the next decade. Under the agreement with Boeing, American plans to acquire 200 737s with options for another 100 from 2013. AA will also gain 260 Airbus A320s with purchase rights for an additional 365 aircraft. Airbus deliveries are also expected to begin in 2013, although 130 of these will switch to the A320neo in 2017. The decision to split the narrow-body order between Airbus and Boeing marks a major coup for the former European planemaker. American currently operates an all-Boeing fleet and the US planemaker sent a top-level delegation to meet with American last week in an attempt to urge the carrier to stick with Boeing. The last-minute negotiations are believed to have tipped the weight of the order towards Boeing, with the 100 737NG options replacing potential A320neos. American currently operates a fleet of 622 aircraft, with a further 54 orders excluding yesterday’s announcement.
