American Airlines and US Airways have started aligning their policies, as part of their merger process.
Passengers travelling on both airlines will now be offered reciprocal frequent flyer benefits, including lounge access, while airport and web check-in timeframes will also be standardised.
The two carriers’ airport ticket counters and gates will be co-located at New York’s JFK Airport, and employees at both American and US Airways have started undergoing joint training to prepare for the merger.
“We’re kicking off the new year by bringing our customers the first phase of enhanced benefits, including the ability to earn and redeem miles when travelling across our stronger combined network,” said Scott Kirby, president of American Airlines.
“Our customers are ready to reap the benefits of our merger and we are pleased they’ll get to experience these perks they value most so early in the integration process.”
The airlines will continue to integrate their operations over the coming months, as they move towards operating as a single American Airlines-branded carrier. This will include US Airways’ exit from the Star Alliance on 30 March 2014 and entry into the oneworld alliance a day later.
