“Friendly, honest conversations”
The choice to accept this position as a travel consultant came easy to Paterson because of how the culture fit him and his career aspirations. He describes working at BCD Travel as “being a part of a big family where you can have friendly, honest conversations”. It’s easy for him to communicate with people no matter their position or distance, as many people do decide to work part-time or full-time from home.
Although his managers encourage him to work from home, Paterson enjoys popping into the office often, but values that flexibility within his position. He also enjoys that he gets to work on teams, as well as alone, and is encouraged to try new things with support.
Paterson defines successful people at BCD Travel as “friendly people who don’t settle”. He has exemplified this idea by continuing to take advantage of the opportunities for growth, such as the APAC Challenge Programme. Paterson applied, and was accepted, to this programme that encourages global learning to build strong leaders.
His learning began in Singapore among other peers in the region and then concluded 12 weeks later in a graduation ceremony in Shanghai. This cross-cultural training has enhanced his skills to work globally as a leader and helped him make invaluable connections around the region.
Paterson continues to improve his skills with his participation in Challenge 2.0. This is a virtual programme where he has been placed on a global team. He is currently working on a team with people from Germany and the Netherlands to engage in the study of active learning.
