Two regional airlines in Malaysia and Indonesia have penned a new cooperation agreement, designed to extend their networks across the two countries.
Malaysia Airlines’ regional subsidiary Firefly and Garuda Indonesia’s low-cost unit Citilink will work together to develop new routes between Malaysia and Indonesia, and further across the ASEAN region, focus on emerging secondary cities.
“This strategic partnership was formed to expand our network and increase profitability,” explained Firefly’s CEO, Ignatius Ong.
“Unlike codesharing, this agreement will bring more traffic into Malaysia and help Firefly grow as an airline with added revenues. Our plans for growth include entering secondary airports in Indonesia, such as Palembang and Padang, just to name a few,” he added.
In March 2014, Citilink launched its first international flight from Surabaya to Johor Bahru. This will be followed this month by new services connecting Surabaya to Kuala Lumpur.
Firefly meanwhile, will launch two new routes later this year, connecting Penang with Krabi and Johor Bahru with Ipoh.
“This business expansion is an attempt to reach broader market in the region, in line with our commitment to provide interconnectivity between cities in the ASEAN market,” said Citilink’s president & CEO, Arif Wibowo.
