Patent for full moon party?
Thailand’s Commerce Minister and Deputy Prime Minister Mingkwan Saengsuwan is reportedly planning to patent the full moon party – an idea which an intellectual property law expert calls “impractical”.
According to the Bangkok Post, Mingkwan had instructed his officials to patent the full moon party, to prevent other countries from copying Thailand’s famous festival. The all-night beach bash is held each full moon on Koh Phangan and large numbers of young foreign tourists.
The idea of copyrighting the full moon party, the minister was quoted saying, came to him after he learned that Singapore had organised a similar party.
Intellectual property law expert Jade Donavanik was quoted by the paper as saying that the minister’s idea was impractical.
“Not everything can be patented.”
