Thai Elite Card flounders
The Elite Card was launched in 2003 to draw wealthy travellers with promises of immigration privileges, long-term property leases and discounts at spas, golf courses and hotels.
However, the scheme has only pulled in 2,185 members, far short of the 1 million called for by 2008.
With the new fee, the card expects to generate THB1.25 billion (US$39.4 million) from 800-plus new members by next year, though the cabinet has yet to approve the plan, having turned previous proposals as unrealistic. (Bangkok Post)
