Pakyong in Sikkim is to get the first of the three airports being built in the northeastern region of India. The proposed airport – to be ready in about two years – would be the first airport for Sikkim. The nearest airport is now 124 km away, in Bagdogra in West Bengal. The new will initially cater to smaller turboprop aircraft like the ATR 72s.
