The tourism industry in Siem Reap, the gateway to Cambodia’s popular Angkor temples, was given a significant boost this week with the opening of a huge new hotel and conference facility.
The Sokha Siem Reap Resort & Convention Center becomes the largest hotel in the city, adding 776 rooms and suites to the Angkor region’s overnight visitor capacity. The hotel will also enable Siem Reap to cater for large conference and events, with extensive function facilities including a 2,200m² ballroom.
Guests will be well connected during their stay, with IPTV entertainment systems available in all rooms and suites and Apple Mac computers installed in public areas.
And Chanthy Sok, Sokha’s group director of sales & marketing, explained that the resort aimed to integrate these high-tech amenities with traditional Khmer culture.
“People from all around the world come specifically to visit Angkor,” commented Ms Sok. “Our new addition to Sokha Hotels encompasses all the elements of Khmer art and culture, a number of beautiful Khmer red sandstone hand carvings will greet you when you arrive in the resort’s impressive lobby and… around the resort. Our new resort truly changes the city’s landscape.”
Covering 23 hectares, this vast resort features an array of other facilities, including three restaurants – Lotus, Khmer Bistro & Bar, and Lemongrass – plus a fitness centre and spa which becomes the largest wellness facility in Siem Reap. There is also a 1,000m² swimming pool which features a 43m² screen for outdoor movies and sporting events.
Sokha Siem Reap Resort & Convention Center becomes the company’s second property in the city, following the Sokha Angkor Resort which opened in 2006. This means that Sokha now has more than 1,000 upscale rooms in Siem Reap, and the company said it is committed to helping the city – and the country – develop as an international tourism destination.
“Having this room capacity in Siem Reap confirms Sokha commitment to tourism in Cambodia,” said Thanet Kun, Sokha’s regional director of sales. “It sends a signal to prospective visitors that Angkor Wat is a destination, not just a tourism gateway but also the new incentive destination for ASEAN.
“Siem Reap’s tourism numbers are constantly increasing, there is an increase in flights therefore it’s an ideal time for a well-known, brand like Sokha Hotels to open this magnificent addition to Siem Reap’s landscape,” she added.
