An Air India Express flight from Dubai to Pune narrowly averted disaster after descending 21,000 feet per minute at high speed. According to an Economic Times report, the captain of the Boeing 737 had left his co-pilot in charge of the controls while he went to the toilet. On returning, he found that the aircraft’s nose was down by minus 23 degrees, and the plane has accelerated to 0.88 Mach - 88% the speed of sound, and far quicker than the usual flying speed of a passenger aircraft. Warning signs were also sounding ion the cockpit, the report stated. India’s Directorate-General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) is investigating the incident, which is a chilling reminder of the recent Air India Express crash at Mangalore, and raises questions over the level of training offer to co-pilots.
