Indonesia AirAsia has responded to rising fuel costs by terminating its Medan-Hong Kong route.
The four-hour service will cease on 12 September according to a report by the Jakarta Post. Commenting on the route cancellation, the carrier said the service consumed more fuel than any other on its network. Despite a 70% load factor on the route, the carrier would have to raise ticket prices against its business model, to justify operations.
“As a low cost carrier, we are very cautious [about] adjusting ticket prices. We will consider [reopening] the route after oil prices are stable,” read a company statement.
Any passengers who have purchased Medan-Hong Kong tickets are entitle to a full refund through company sales offices.
