East Timor has declared a state of emergency after attacks on the country’s top leaders in a failed coup. President Jose Ramos-Horta, who was shot, was flown to a Darwin hospital where he remains in a stable condition. Rebel soldiers separately also attacked Prime Minister Xanana Gusmao’s motorcade but he escaped unhurt.
