Airlines based in the Asia Pacific region carried 21.9 million international passengers in June 2015, 5.9% more than in the same month last year.
According to the latest report from the Association of Asia Pacific Airlines (AAPA), overall demand has remained resilient, led by strong leisure travel ahead of the summer holiday season. Measured in revenue passenger kilometres (RPK), international passenger demand increased 6.6% – ahead of a 6.1% increase in available seat capacity. This allowed cabin load factors to increase 0.3 percentage points to 77.8%.
“Regional travel markets, notably including travel to Japan, remained generally strong, although the Korean market was affected by the recent MERS outbreak,” noted Andrew Herdman, AAPA director general. “Long-haul travel demand to and from North America was also encouraging.
“Overall, growth in demand for air passenger travel is expected to remain positive, driven by competitive fares and continued growth in regional economies,” he added.
For the first half of the year, Asia Pacific airlines carry a combined total of 135.6m international passengers, 9.3% more than in the same period last year.
