South Korea’s Asiana Airlines has signed an agreement with Airbus for the purchase of 25 A321neo aircraft.
The new single-aisle jets will seat 180 passengers in a two-class layout, and will be mainly used to operate routes to regional destinations across Asia.
The new aircraft will join the existing fleet of A320 and A321 aircraft operated by Asiana and its subsidiary, Air Busan. The A321 will now become the main single-aisle aircraft type used by both carriers.
“The A320 family is a proven success with Asiana Airlines and Air Busan, combining reliability, excellent operating economics and superior passenger comfort,” said Kim Soo Cheon, Asiana’s president & CEO. “With the A321neo we will be able to look forward to even greater levels of efficiency, with a 20% reduction in fuel consumption and increased flying range.
“The acquisition of the A321neo underscores our strategy to operate only the most modern and efficient aircraft that the industry has to offer,” he added.
Seoul-based Asiana currently operates 33 Airbus single-aisle aircraft, plus 15 twin-aisle A330-300s and two A380s. It also has outstanding orders for four more A380s and 30 new A350s.
