Airlines should be included in the ATOL financial protection scheme, according to 95% of ABTA’s members. The association’s recent survey, which was answered by 225 agencies online, has shown support for airline inclusion, which would provide cover for flight-plus and flight inclusive holidays sold in the UK. ABTA has now repeated its call for carriers to be included and has contacted the Department for Transport (DfT) to clarify how its members can implement ATOL changes, which are due to take place on 1 January. “We have called on the Government to ensure that the reforms are both fair and workable. There is overwhelming support for airlines to be included because without them, the scheme will not provide a truly comprehensive and fair system of consumer financial protection,” said Mark Tanzer, chief executive of ABTA. “It is absolutely essential that principles are clear and mechanisms affordable, if the trade is to be able to support the Government’s objective of providing better protection for consumers”.
