Auckland has opened its new cruise terminal, following the redevelopment of a former cargo shed.
The city’s mayor, Len Brown, welcomed key stakeholders from New Zealand’s tourism industry to the Shed 10 terminal today (Monday 5 August 2013), marking the launch of the new cruise and events facility.
More than 100 of the country’s cruise and tourism representatives took a tour of Shed 10, which will serve as Auckland’s primary cruise terminal from the start of this year’s cruise season. It will welcome its first ship on 11 October, with the arrival of Carnival Cruise’s Sea Princess.
Figures released today confirm that the 2012-13 season was Auckland’s biggest ever, with 100 cruise ships bringing 178,000 passengers and 78,000 crew to the city, injecting NZ$116.3 million (US$91.1m) into New Zealand’s economy. And Brett O’Riley, chief executive of ATEED (Auckland Tourism, Events & Economic Development), said the development of the Shed 10 terminal forms part of an overall goal of generating NZ$6 billion through the tourism sector by 2021.
“We look forward to welcoming cruise passengers to our wonderful city from October. The new terminal will feature an i-SITE Visitor Information Centre, where passengers can get information and advice which will help ensure they get the most out of their stay,” said O’Reily.
“We are confident that this new terminal will help us to improve on that performance and encourage more ships to come to Auckland – and for passengers to make sure Auckland is top of their list of places to return to.”
The 103-year-old Shed 10 has been completely revamped and now features a first floor passenger lounge with views of the Waitemata Harbour, plus ground floor space for passenger luggage and security and border processing.
