Australia’s Minister for Tourism, Martin Ferguson, has said that strong air links to Thailand are providing opportunities for further tourism growth between the two countries, The Nation has reported. In the speech at the Australian-Thailand Chamber of Commerce in Bangkok, he said that good air connections helped more than 80,000 Thais visit Australia during 2007, with a further 225,000 travellers en route to Australia transiting via Thailand that year.
A bilateral agreement saw the number for weekly flights between the countries rise from 35 to 40 in July, with a further 5 services to be added in March 2009.
“These increases are vital to our tourism market as they will improve Australia’s access to Bangkok and its extensive network of connections throughout Asia, Europe, and the Middle East.” Ferguson told the meeting. “It is now up to Australia’s tourism and aviation industries to work together to capitalise on the new opportunities,” he added.
