Australian Alps to be protected

The Alps of southeast Australia have been placed on the country’s National Heritage Register, the Independent has reported. The 1.5 million hectare region encompasses 11 national parks and reserves, including the Snowy Mountains, and is home to unique species of flora and fauna.
The Australian Conservation Foundation named the Alps as one of Australia’s 10 national “icons” most at risk from global warming.
