The embattled Thai government plans to use the U-Tapao military airport as a replacement for Bangkok’s besieged hubs, the Bangkok Post has reported. The base in Rayong, 140km southeast of the capital, usually serves a small number of charter flights for the nearby resort of Pattaya. However it is poorly equipped to handle the huge volume of flights and passengers which would be diverted there, according to the report.
Thailand’s Department of Civil Aviation has reportedly confirmed it is ready to allow airlines to switch from Suvarnabhumi and Don Mueang to U-Tapao.
