Passengers flying from Heathrow Airport’s Terminal 5 have suffered with baggage delays since Thursday after an IT system failed.
Many of those travelling throughout the weekend have been left without their bags and the Sunday Times reported it could be days before British Airways clears the backlog.
In a statement released on Saturday, Heathrow Airport said: “We are experiencing intermittent issues with the Terminal 5 baggage system which has caused some bags to be processed manually. While passengers can currently check-in bags our engineers are still working to identify the root cause of the problems. Passengers may wish to carry essential items in hand baggage where possible.
“Manual processing has led to some bags not making flights in time. We are very sorry for any passengers affected and we are working with airlines to reunite passengers with their bags as quickly as possible.”
The disruption has caused the airport to conduct testing on its luggage system at Terminal 2. As a result THAI Airways has had to postpone the date it starts to fly from the new terminal from 2 July to the end of August.
EVA Air will start flying from Terminal 2 from 2 July and Avianca will still launch its flights to Bogota on Friday. Aegean Airlines will also start to commence flying from Terminal 2 from 23 July.
