The long-term project to ease traffic congestion in Bali has become more controversial, after the Bali Post reported that authorities now plan to build an overpass connecting south Denpasar and Nusa Dua across an environmentally-sensitive area of mangrove forest. A Bali provincial spokesperson was reported saying last week that having considered a range of alternatives, including an undersea tunnels, the decision has been made to develop a 11.5km-long elevated highway over southern Bali mangroves. The highway will be suspended on 1,000 supporting columns with an access point to the airport. Completion of the US$155 million project is expected in 2013.
