Bangkok’s Suvarnabhumi airport will not be flooded, despite the mass of water gathering in the outskirts of the Thai capital, according to the Airports of Thailand Public Company Limited (AOT). The airport authority is taking preventive measures, including the dredging of nearby canals and removing of garbage and plant life to facilitate drainage to the sea, Thai News Agency reported Saturday, citing AOT Vice President Somchai Sawadiphol.
He added that the Royal Irrigation Department pumping station, near Suvarnabhumi, was pumping 15 million cubic metres a day towards the sea – only half of its capacity of 30 million cubic metres.
Suvarnabhumi has remained open throughout Bangkok’s flood crisis, and is handling extra flights following the closure of the city’s second airport, Don Meuang.
