Bangkok’s second airport, Don Mueang, has a future as the city’s low-cost carrier terminal (LCCT), Thailand’s Deputy Prime Minister, Korbsak Sabhavasu, has said.
The Nation reported Korbsak, who is in charge of economic affairs, as saying that Don Mueang airport should not be abandoned as it could relieve the burden on Suvarnabhumi and allow the new airport’s costly expansion plans to be put on hold.
The decision will depend on Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva and other economic ministers when they meet to decide Don Mueang’s future after returning from the Songkran holidays. Don Mueang’s future is in doubt as Transport Minister, Sohpon Zarum, is arguing that a single-airport policy would help improve Suvarnabhumi’s chances of becoming an aviation hub for the region.
National carrier, Thai Airways International, moved its remaining domestic operations from Don Mueang to Suvarnabhumi last month, leaving only low-cost outfits Nok Air and One-Two-Go now using the aging hub.
Korbsak however, believes that turning Don Mueang into an LCCT, similar to the currently facilities in Kuala Lumpur, would give passengers a choice.
