Bangladesh has claimed sovereignty over an island that scientists have said no longer exists, Channel NewsAsia has reported. The uninhabited island in the Bay of Bengal was though to have been swallow-up by rising sea levels last month, but Dhaka’s Foreign Secretary, Mirajul Quayes, has reportedly said the island could reappear again, and if it does that Bangladesh “has sovereignty over the territory”. The island, called New Moore island by India and South Talpatti by Bangladesh, was 3.5km long and 3.0km wide before it was engulfed by the sea.
