The government of Indonesia’s Riau Islands has said that it wants to establish direct flights between Batam and mainland China.

The province’s acting governor, Agung Mulyana, told the Antara news agency that a direct service would facilitate tourism and trade between Riau and China, contributing to economic and industrial development.

Currently Chinese nationals wanting to visit Riau and Batam need to take an internal flight from Jakarta or a ferry service from Singapore, which lies across the Malacca Strait from Batam.

Agung added that he has already discussed the matter with Indonesian Ambassador to China during a recent visit.

Batam’s Hang Nadim Airport currently handles long-haul flights to and from Saudi Arabia for the Hajj pilgrimmage.
