Authorities in Beijing are planning to ramp up the protection of the old city over the next five years, in a bid to achieve UNESCO World Heritage status. According to the China Daily, the development will focus around the city’s ‘central axis’ – the historic areas connecting the former city gates running between the north and south of the Chinese capital. Di’anmen, the missing northern gate, is expected to be rebuilt close to its original location. Two structures at Yongdingmen, at the southern end of the axis, will also be rebuilt. The central axis extends 7.8km from Di’anmen to Yongdingmen, passing through seven other gates, including one at Tiananmen Square. Much of the ancient city was destroyed in the 1950s.
