Bangalore Metropolitan Transport Corporation has recently launched its Intelligent Transport System project. The project, launched by chief minister Siddaramaiah, will provide for electronic ticketing and live tracking of buses reported the Hindu.

“Bengaluru is growing rapidly and has a floating population of one million people per day. Transport services in the city need to be citizen-friendly and this is one of those projects. In addition, smart cards will also be introduced in July,” Siddaramaiah said during the launch.

The project is divided into three modules-vehicle tracking, public information, and electronic ticketing. The vehicle tracking unit that has been installed across the entire fleet of 6,414 buses, will help the corporation to track buses and check for problems.

The 10,000 electronic ticketing machines will help check pilferage of ticket fares and predicting routes that are the busiest or running at sub-optimal capacity. An Android mobile app to help commuters plan routes and know estimated time of arrival of buses was also launched at the event. The app allows users to locate buses based on routes, bus stops and plan trips.

“We have put up bus information displays at 35 stands across the city and at the airport,” BMTC managing director, Ekroop Caur, told the newspaper.
