Best Western has continued its expansion in Myanmar with the opening of its first hotel in Mandalay.

The company has taken over the management of the existing Hotel Shwe Pyi Thar, which has now been rebranded as the Best Western Premier Hotel Shwe Pyi Thar. This marks Best Western’s debut in Mandalay and also the first ever upscale Best Western Premier hotel in Myanmar.

At present, the hotel offers 91 rooms and suites, ranging from 33 to 380m². But the property will be expanded in future, with plans for a new wing that will add 200 more rooms. This work is expected to be completed by the fourth quarter of 2016.

Facilities include a restaurant, bar, swimming pool, fitness centre, spa services and retail outlets. And for the MICE market there is also a 660m² ballroom, a separate conference room and a 4,200m² lawn for outdoor events.

“Mandalay is a city with a rich history and a bright future,” said Ron Pohl, Best Western’s senior vice president of brand management.

“We are delighted to be able to enter this exciting market with such an elite property. Hotel Shwe Pyi Thar has already developed an excellent reputation. The expansion work being planned, combined with the input of Best Western’s international standards of guest service, will usher in a new and exciting era for the hotel and the city,” Pohl added.

Olivier Berrivin, Best Western’s managing director of international operations for Asia, commented; “Best Western International has identified Myanmar as a key market for our future expansion in Southeast Asia. Having recently opened our second hotel in Yangon, Best Western Chinatown, I am thrilled that we have been able to follow this up so quickly with the launch of our first hotel in Mandalay.

“And as the first ever Best Western Premier hotel in Myanmar, we look forward to showcasing our highest level of comfort and facilities to guests in this exciting country.”

Best Western first entered Myanmar in 2013 with the launch of the Best Western Green Hill Hotel in Yangon. This was joined last month by the new Best Western Chinatown Hotel, making Best Western one of the first international hotel groups with two properties in Myanmar’s largest city.

And Best Western will now continue its expansion in Myanmar, including plans to open its second hotel in Mandalay and its first ever property in the country’s capital city, Nay Pyi Taw.
