British Midland International (BMI) will withdraw its services to Amritsar from 26 October. BMI’s withdrawal is likely to make it difficult for Airports Authority of India to manage the airport. “BMI pulling the plug on operations will incur a loss of INR3-4 crore annually for the airport,” an airport official said.
The airport has been struggling to retain international airlines ever since Singapore Airlines and Jet Airways stopped international operations in 2008. “The airport is facing a loss of about Rs. 35 crore annually and the pullout by international airlines is worrisome… But we have the infrastructure in place and are regularly writing to airlines to start operations from here,” Airport Director Suneel Dutt was quoted as saying by the Hindustan Times. “
Air India has also withdrawn its popular Amritsar-Toronto service.
