Boeing records 662 commercial plane orders for 2008

Following a troubled year, US-based Boeing Company has announced total orders of 662 commercial aircraft for 2008. This figure brings its total backlog of unfulfilled commercial orders to more than 3,700 planes.
The Next-Generation 737 remained Boeing’s best-selling aircraft, with 484 ordered last year. Demand for the new 787 Dreamliner was also strong, with 93 orders, primarily from Middle Eastern airlines.
“While we clearly faced obstacles, 2008 also was a time of accomplishment at Commercial Airplanes,” said Scott Carson, Boeing Commercial Airplanes President and CEO, who added that the 2008 order was the eighth highest on record.
Boeing’s deliveries in 2008 saw 375 aircraft flown to customers worldwide. These included 290 737s (including six Boeing Business Jets), 14 747s, 10 767s and 61 777s. Boeing’s delivery schedule was severely hit by machinists’ strike at the company’s Seattle plant.
