Boeing has unveiled the interior cabin design that could be used on commercial space shuttles in future.
The US company has showcased the design of its Crew Space Transportation (CST-100) manned space capsule, showing what kind of surroundings the new generation of space tourists can expect to travel in.
The CST-100 has been developed as part of NASA’s Commercial Crew initiative, and is designed to transport up to seven crew members or a mix of crew and cargo to low-Earth-orbit destinations such as the International Space Station.
“We are moving into a truly commercial space market and we have to consider our potential customers – beyond NASA – and what they need in a future commercial spacecraft interior,” said Chris Ferguson, Boeing’s director of crew & mission operations for the Commercial Crew Program.
Boeing said designing space shuttle interiors was “a natural progression” from its commercial aircraft work. The new design features a “daytime blue sky scene” that Boeing said would help passengers “maintain their connection with Earth”.
