British internet users researched flights in more long-haul destinations during the first six months of this year compared to 2010,according to Cheapflights.
The comparison site has seen searches to Bodrum,Turkey climb a staggering 971% while the Iraqi town of Erbil has seen search growth of 504%. Hawaii’s Kona; Hangzhou in China and Sapporo in Japan also featured in the ‘rising stars’ list.
“The trend shows that travel is still a priority even if budgets are tight. Continued economic slowdown has only served to create new destination trends with consumers literally willing to go the distance in places that will stretch their pounds,” said Nadine Hallak, from Cheapflights.co.uk.
Destinations in China, South America and Africa dominated the top 25 list, although Zakynthos in Greece saw a 25% rise in searches and Vilnius in Lithuania registered a 24% increase. Cornwall and Southampton featured in the list with 21% rises.
