Since Saturday the travel industry has been focusing on initiatives to Make Holidays Greener and encouraging its travel partners and clients to join in with eco-friendly activities. But while the industry continues to do its bit for the environment, it seems that the customer themselves is not so aware of the impact their holiday has on our world. According to a new study by Eurostar, 36% of Brits understood that in day-to-day life driving was the most carbon generating activity but only 17% thought that holidays and recreation had the most damaging impact. Furthermore the results showed that only 26% of Brits would consider booking an eco hotel and only 5% listed environmental concerns as the top three holiday criteria (which included categories such as weather). The study also showed that even environmentally aware Brits were not heavily influenced by a more eco lifestyle, with 34% saying they would take less holidays to reduce their carbon footprint and 32% would switch from short haul flights to rail travel. “We know that many of our customers are concerned about environmental issues, yet this research shows that when planning their holidays, only a few consumers are willing to make changes to reduce their carbon footprint,” said Peter Bragg, head of environment and energy for Eurostar. “There are confusing messages around the issue but as people are now travelling from a younger age, it is crucial that they understand there are sustainable travel options available.”
