Budget fares lift local tourism in Philippines
Budget airlines have played a key role in spurring domestic tourism in the Philippines in the past two years, according to an official of the Philippine Travel Agencies Association.
John Paul M. Cabalza, PTAA vice president in charge of inbound business, was quoted in the Inquirer as saying that the growth was observed not only in the increase in big conventions held in the country but also in the surge in local travel by families, friends and individuals.
Cabalza, who is also managing director of Cencorp Travel & Tours, said: “A major driver of what we are seeing as a trend is that for groups of professionals who are holding conventions or high-profile gatherings, the tendency is to go to the provinces rather than overseas.”
“This is true especially among doctors, who want to be able to get back to their base in case of emergencies,” he was quoted saying.
