‘Busiest day’ for China’s transport network

China’s road and railways experienced their busiest day on Tuesday, as millions of travellers returned to major cities following the Spring Festival holidays. Xinhua reported the country’s Ministry of Railways as saying there had been a sharp rise in the number of travellers leaving smaller cities on Monday bound for key hubs such as Beijing, Shanghai and Guangzhou, while the Ministry of Transport said that the nation’s highways are also likely to be at their most congested on Tuesday and Wednesday.
On Sunday, the fourth day of Spring Festival, the country’s railways carried a total of 5.3 million passengers, adding to the 4.7 million who rode the rails the previous day, the Ministry of Railways stated. A further 38.6 million travellers took to buses and boats on Sunday, Ministry of Transport figures estimated. China’s railways catered for approximately 77.3 million passengers during the first 15 days of the Spring Festival holiday period. The number of Spring Festival air passengers meanwhile, increased 6% year-on-year to 5.07 million, according to the Civil Aviation Administration of China (CAAC).
