The landscape of Cambodia’s Sihanoukville coastline is set to be changed forever after work started of a 500-room luxury hotel on the resort’s Ochheuteal beach. The Phnom Penh Post reported that the Sokha Hotel Group has begun construction on the project, which is expected to be complete by 2010.
Company CEO Bobby Toh said that the hotel will provide some 1,200 new jobs and contribute to Sihanoukville’s transformation from a once-sleepy backpacker haven to a luxury tourism destination.
“The development will actively contribute to improving the local economy, tourism infrastructure and facilities, as well as creating new job opportunities for Cambodians,” Toh said.
Ochheuteal beach is currently adorned by low-rise, thatched bamboo guesthouses, bars and eateries. However recent investment in the resort town, and its off-lying islands looks set to change the landscape of the town forever.
